If a glacial lake in the Julian Alps is your idea of a romantic getaway or wedding venue, then Lake Bled, Slovenia might be the place for you!
Located in northwestern Slovenia, adjoining the town of Bled, the lake is approximately 2,120 m (6,960 ft) long and 1,380 m (4,530 ft) wide. It gets up to 100 feet deep. It’s surrounded by mountains and forests, and sitting in the middle of the lake is an island upon which sits the picturesque Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. Weddings are their business.
Upon arriving at the small island, a person must climb 99 steps to get to the church. It’s considered good luck for the groom to carry the bride up all 99 steps; whew!
The island is also home to Bled Castle. Some of the many places of interest to visit are the old printing press shop and an old winery where you can label and cork your own bottle of aged wine. Other activities at Lake Bled are fishing, hiking, rowing, boat rides, and swimming.
It should be noted that weddings can be officiated by persons in Renaissance costumes, and the atmosphere at the various shops is enhanced by those owners who keep true to the times by wearing period clothing.
